विकिपीडियाSetting up your browser for Indic scripts - विकिपीडिया

There are 2 parts of the setup.

  1. Having a Unicode Capable Browser
  2. Having the Fonts

 Mac OSX

  • Safari: I use Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) and the handling of indian scripts in Safari (the browser that comes with it) is amazingly flawless.
  • Firefox: Unfortunately Indic rendering of Firefox on Mac OS X is not up to the mark yet. It does display Indic script but there are many rendering bugs esp. with matras.
  • The Indic fonts are not installed by default. To install Indic fonts you have to start running setup from the installation DVD and choose custom installation mode and select Indic fonts (I only vaguely remember how I did this so use your brain more actively on this one).
  1. TODO: Write more precise font installation instructions.

In Finder, browse to /Volumes/<Install/Restore Disk>/System/Installation/Packages/ (use the terminal.app to verify the paths on your system since they don't show up in Finder. Install the AdditionalFonts.pkg and AdditionalAsianFonts.pkg and they should work just fine.

MS Windows

  • यदि आप हिन्दी पढ़ने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं, इंटरनेट एक्सप्लोरर सबसे सही सेवाएं प्रदान करता है ।
  • If you are attemping to read Hindi, Internet Explorer offers the most accurate rendering.
  • Mozilla Firefox supports most Indic languages. Hindi (Devanagari) rendering on Firefox is currently quite satisfactory, although there are a few placement quirks. If rendering in Firefox appears to be incorrect, please ensure that complex script support has been installed (see below).
  • Opera is not recommended for Hindi scripts, as it mixes the 'matraas' (vowels) in a strange pattern. For example, 'Hindi' is read as 'Hanidi'.
  • Indic fonts are not installed by default on Windows. If you have a version of Windows that supports Indic languages, you can install the Unicode fonts / complex script support needed as follows:

Windows XP:

  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options
  • Select "Add other languages"
  • Check "Install files for complex script..."
  • Click OK, and insert your Windows CD if prompted

Windows 2000:

  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Regional Options
  • Select "Add other languages"
  • Check "Indic"
  • Click OK, and insert your Windows CD if prompted (restart might be required)

 GNU/Linux

  • pango enabled firefox does provide good indic fonts support. In Debian GNU/Linux Iceweasel provides the best indic rendition.
  • Konqueror (KDE web browser) provides good devnagiri (hindi) support. However, hindi pages that do not use unicode may not be rendered well.
  • If your distribution does not come with any hindi font, you will need to install one.

Installing Font:

  • Download Gargi font
  • In KDE Control Center (kcontrol), select System Administration -> Font Installer, and add the downloaded font
  • You may need to logout and login back
